My first travel with Servas – Nepal

One meeting, one open heart , that’s all it takes to feel at home in the world.

During my most recent visit to Nepal, I had the privilege of being hosted by a wonderful Servas family. The mother’s name is Sharada Kumari Acharya, and her son is Oscar.

We first met over a small cup of coffee in Kathmandu , a simple, intimate first encounter that immediately turned into a moment of deep connection. Sharada, an impressive and gracious woman, and her talented son who lives with her and had just completed his IT studies and received his college certificate, shared their world with me: their life stories and the human warmth that so deeply characterizes Nepal.

Sharada has raised her son on her own, while her second son works in Canada. Yet throughout all these years, while raising two remarkable children, she always found the time and strength to volunteer tirelessly for her community in Kathmandu. A rare woman, larger than life, who embodies the true meaning of giving.

I was invited to their home for lunch, but it quickly became clear that I had also become a student.

She taught me how to prepare Nepal’s most beloved traditional dish, Dal Bhat, and with her and her friend Laxmi, I learned how to make momo. We cooked together, laughed, shared personal stories, both joyful and sad, exchanged much motherly pride, and tasted flavors that turned the day into an unforgettable one.

It was a perfect day of closeness, of meeting between cultures, of hearts opening and genuine homely warmth.

That was when I truly understood the deep meaning of Servas: not just to travel, but to meet. Not just to see the world, but to truly know the people who illuminate it from within. These are the experiences that connect you to local people and stay with you forever.

I am deeply grateful to this wonderful family for welcoming me into their lives, their kitchen, and their hearts.

Moments like these remind me again and again why choosing the path of human connection is the greatest gift any journey can offer.

.I hope for many more such trips and connections in my future travels. It was a wonderful travel to Nepal , meeting and hosting in Nepal.

הטיול הראשון שלי עם סרווס – נפאל. כיף לטייל ולהתארח עם סרווס – הפעם בנפאל.

מפגש אחד, לב פתוח אחד  וזה כל מה שצריך כדי להרגיש בבית בעולם.

במהלך הביקור האחרון שלי בנפאל זכיתי להתארח אצל משפחה מקסימה ממשפחת Servas. לאמא קוראים Sharada Kumari Acharya  לבן שלה קוראים Oscar.

נפגשנו לראשונה לקפה קטן בקטמנדו – מפגש ראשון, פשוט ואינטימי, שהפך מיד לרגע של חיבור עמוק. האם, אישה מרשימה ומלאת חסד, ובנה המוכשר שחי עמה, שזה עתה סיים לימודי IT וקיבל את תעודתו מהקולג׳' חלקו איתי את עולמם, את סיפורי חייהם ואת החום האנושי שמאפיין כל-כך את נפאל.

האם מגדלת את בנה לבדה, תוך שהבן השני עובד בקנדה, ובכל זאת לאורך כל השנים בעודה מגדלת 2 ילדים למופת, מצאה זמן וכוחות להתנדב ללא הפסקה למען הקהילה שלה בקטמנדו. אישה נדירה, גדולה מהחיים, שמזכירה מהי המשמעות האמיתית של נתינה.

הוזמנתי אל ביתם לארוחת צהריים, אך מהר מאוד הסתבר שהפכתי גם לתלמידה.

היא לימדה אותי להכין את המנה הנפאלית המסורתית והאהובה ביותר דאל באט, ואת המומו למדתי להכין בעזרתה ובעזרת חברתה Laxmi. בישלנו יחד, צחקנו, החלפנו סיפורים אישיים מהחיים עצובים ומשמחים, הרבה גאוות אמהות, טעמנו טעמים, שהפכו את היום הזה לבלתי-נשכח.

זה היה יום מושלם של קרבה, של מפגש בין תרבויות, של לבבות שנפתחים ושל חמימות ביתית.
ואז הבנתי, זו בדיוק המשמעות העמוקה של Servas לא רק לנסוע, אלא לפגוש. לא רק לראות עולם, אלא להכיר אנשים אמיתיים שמאירים אותו מבפנים, אלו החוויות שמחברים אותך לאנשים המקומיים ונשארים איתך לתמיד.

אני מודה למשפחה הנהדרת הזו על שהכניסה אותי אל חייה, אל מטבחה ואל ליבה.
רגעים כאלה מזכירים לי שוב ושוב מדוע לבחור בדרך של מפגש אנושי הוא המתנה הגדולה ביותר שיש למסע להציע.
