To mark the International Day of Peace (observed on September 21, 2026), Servas members held a gathering on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Tamra—an Arab-Muslim city in the Lower Galilee with a population of approximately 27,000 (as of 2025). Read more at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamra

Over 50 members attended, including several newcomers.

In Tamra, we were hosted by Samir Samar, who spoke to us about the town and the lives of citizens within Arab society, alongside the Jewish residents of the surrounding areas.

A resident of Shefa-Amr, who works in the field of women's status in Arab-Muslim society, was also invited to the meeting; she shared insights regarding the challenges faced by women in this society as well as the positive progress being made in their lives.

Joining the host was Avinoam Cohen, who presented—via an engaging and moving slideshow—the personal journey of his family. They are one of the oldest families in Peki'in, a unique ancient village in the Upper Galilee with a population of about 6,270 (as of 2026); the village is inhabited primarily by Druze (approx. 80%), alongside Arab Muslims and a small minority of Jews. Avinoam recounted his family's history and their experiences of coexistence within the Druze and Muslim society in which they lived. Read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peki%27in

We were deeply moved by the warm, heartfelt hospitality and welcome extended by Samir and his family—including children, grandchildren, and friends. We also enjoyed a lunch featuring an abundant variety of dishes typical of Arab-Muslim cuisine; everything was served with open hands and generous hearts.

Throughout the presentations, our group showed great interest and asked questions, leading to a rich exchange of information and ideas.

Thank you to the hosts, the participants, and the organizers. We left with a wealth of knowledge and a strong desire to foster cooperation and live in peace with all sectors and religions in the country. We were also delighted that some of our hosts expressed an interest in joining Servas Israel.
