Travel in Europe and NY: Servas, Buddhism and Wedding

Servas hosts

Traveling in Europe and New York with Servas

I traveled with two main purposes in mind: a 30-day Buddhist practice retreat in Poland, and my cousin's wedding in Long Island.
I decided to connect these two major events by taking a trip through Europe. Here is how my itinerary came together:

  • Started in Prague for two days.

  • Took a night bus to Warsaw.

  • Spent a month in the village of Dłużew.

  • Returned to Warsaw and then moved on to Wrocław.

  • Took a train to Berlin.

  • Looped around Northern Germany via Hamburg, Lübeck, Bremen, Leipzig, and Dresden.

  • Returned to Berlin, from where I flew to New York.

Before setting off for the Czech Republic, I arranged two Servas stays: one in Prague before my month of practice, and the second in Warsaw right after it.

Prague, Czech Republic

In Prague, I stayed for two nights with a lovely couple of veteran Servas members who have grown-up children. Their home is right in the city center with easy access to the metro. Since their younger daughter had traveled to Slovakia, they generously let me use her room.

They cooked me a delicious vegan gnocchi, and as a small thank-you gift, I brought them a little bottle of sumac spice, which I used to roast some fennel and kohlrabi for them. Their oldest son, a lawyer who had studied in Germany, took me out to meet his university friends and then to a gig of some local rappers he knew. I also got excellent recommendations for vegan restaurants and must-visit art spots around the city.

Warsaw, Poland

In Warsaw, I stayed with a wonderful young, recently married couple living in the southwestern part of the city. The area had convenient bus connections and a massive, green park complete with outdoor gym equiעדent and walking trails. The wife is a doctor working in a biopsy-focused laboratory, and the husband is a former consulate employee who had recently started his own private visa consulting business.

I had originally arranged a two-day stay, but they insisted they would be happy to host me for another two nights—making it four in total. On the third day, they took me to a lakeside beach. We swam, had a picnic, and were joined by her brother.

Hamburg, Germany

After moving on to Berlin, I arranged a stay with a couple in Hamburg. The partner had mentioned in her profile that she had previously visited Bethlehem. Intrigued by her experience, I suggested we chat about it. They hosted me for two days, took me to a water light show in the park, and generously shared their groceries and home-cooked meals with me. They even lent me a bicycle so we could go riding together.

Leipzig, Germany

Traveling without a rigid itinerary, and after being unable to find a host in Bremen, I wrote on short notice to a couple in Leipzig to ask if they could host me. They graciously agreed and were fantastic hosts.

It worked out perfectly for both of us: their oldest daughter, who is studying in Texas, had lost her glasses, so they had me bring a replacement pair to the US to mail locally. During my stay in Leipzig—which was probably my favorite stop in Germany—I went on a bike ride to a lake with the mother, and the whole family, along with a friend of theirs, went out for dinner at a vegan Vietnamese restaurant. They mentioned they would have gladly hosted me longer if it weren't for a national meeting of all Servas Germany members happening in Berlin.

Brooklyn, New York

Before my cousin's wedding, I arranged a two-day Servas stay in Brooklyn, giving me enough time to get sorted with appropriate wedding attire. My hosts—an older, veteran Servas couple who had spent several years as Peace Corps volunteers in Botswana—gave me a free hand in the kitchen and even offered to let me borrow a suit instead of renting one.

Since their son had moved out, I stayed in his room, essentially giving me a whole floor to myself in the heart of Brooklyn. The conversations with them were deeply engaging.

Reflections on the Journey

After the wedding, I continued traveling around the US without using Servas, as I already knew people in the places I visited. I am so glad I had the opportunity to experience these destinations by living with locals through Servas in cozy, home-like environments. Servas members place an immense amount of trust in the travelers they host, and it truly makes a world of difference.
